“I’ve always hated the term human resources”

I’ve always hated the term human resources. It’s so impersonal and cold. People are not resources to be used up and replaced on a whim. Looking at people as assets change the entire focus and enable new possibilities. How do you treat employees as assets? The first step is understanding what an asset means: “an item or resource that has value or the potential for growth” (Investopedia). It doesn’t matter if it’s a tangible object or even just a simple idea—if it has value, it’s worth investing in! Cash, real estate, inventory, equipment, and tools are assets to a company. Most organizations, however, will invest up to ten times more time, money, and resources in equipment improvement and maintenance than they invest in their people.
By treating their people like assets, what changes? VALUE! The key to unlocking their potential is treating them like assets, investing in their training and development, holding them with esteem and respect, and providing opportunities for improvement and growth.
